Firefighters Wanted for Cancer Research Study
Kaiser Permanente is collaborating with the California Professional Firefighters (CFP) to conduct a research study to understand and address the health risks associated with the firefighter profession. If you are a current Kaiser Permanent member and an active or retired firefighter, you are invited to enroll in this study before February 28, 2026.
Past research has shown that firefighters face higher risks for serious health conditions, including cancer. Through this research study, CFP aims to learn how firefighting in California impacts health and help design programs that meet the unique wellness needs of firefighters. The first phase of the study will focus on cancer, a common concern among firefighters. The study will also examine the impact firefighting has on biological aging.
Kaiser’s Misha McKinney, vice president of clinical programs, and Dr. Danielle Mellace, internal medicine physician, recently joined the CFP podcast to discuss the unique health challenges firefighters face, the importance of primary care and early detection, and how lifestyle medicine can reduce cancer risk. You can listen to the episode on CPF’s website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, PodBean, and YouTube.
